Some Young People Act So Strange!

Correct me if I am wrong. Is there a reason other than drugs that the younger people are so nasty to the general public?
While I recognize that people are insecure and stressed, I fail to understand the reaction of certain young ones to a simple salutation. They stare like you just spoke Chinese and glare like they hate your guts for talking at them.
So very strange.
